Biloxi, Mississippi - Katrina Recovery
The perspective of a volunteer in the recovery effort.
Homes

Residents returning
to their homes after the hurricane frequently found nothing but rubble.
Sometimes the
homes had been knocked from their foundations and swept into other locations.

A roof from somewhere down the street lies in the back yard of a home.

A front yard in Long Beach is filled with cars, trucks, and debris.

In Long Beach cars and trucks were mixed into the rubble where homes used
to be.

Even if a house remained intact, everything in the interior needs to be removed,
down to the basic
structure. This work continues today, with many people lacking the resources
to have this done.
Instead, they live, often with their children, inside rotting houses, breathing
mold.

Biloxi's old Gulf-front mansions felt the full power of the storm.
