Armenia is a land-locked nation approximately the size of the state of Maryland. It is bordered by Georgia in the north, Iran in the south, Turkey in the west, and Azerbajan in the east. The latter two borders are hostile and closed.

The Republic of Nagorno Karabagh, a disputed area also claimed by Azerbajan, is 95% Armenian by population. The area has a long history of association with Armenia.

Most of Armenia is mountainous, with a few fertile valleys.
